Simcoe Lions Win Ontario Bantam

HESPELER -- Simcoe Lions brought the first Ontario minor hockey
championship to Simcoe in 11 years, Sunday when they defeated Hespeler 3-1
in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association Bantam A playoff.
The Lions won the opening game of the best-of-three series Friday night in
Simcoe by an identical 3-1 score.
Coached by Larry Chambers and Ron Cullimore, the Simcoe boys breezed
through the Ontario playdowns undefeated in 10 games and eliminated teams
from Dunnville, Ingersoll, Fort Erie and Goderich before meeting Hespeler.
In all, the Lions won a total of 43 games this season, while typing one
and losing one.
Team captain Doug Demeyere accounted for all three goals in Friday night's
game and scored the clincher Sunday afternoon in the dying minutes.
John James scored the other two Simcoe goals as well as picking up an
assist on Demeyere's tally.
John Luke and Gary Robinson shared goaltending duties in the weekend games
-- Luke in the net for Sunday's game and Robinson on duty for the opener.
Upon arrival in Simcoe at 6 p.m. Sunday, the Lions were greeted by several
hundred well-wishers and given the traditional hero's ride through
downtown streets on the local fire truck.
Three other Simcoe teams have won
OMHA titles -- 1956-57 Midget A Minor, 1954-55 Bantam B and 1952-53 Midget
B.
