Chuck Brimmer always has the
time, energy, skill and enthusiasm to organize another
event.
In 1971 Chuck
advertised on radio for Atom players to play in a summer hockey
league in Ancaster. He organized car pools, got parents
involved, and coached the team to the championship. It was that
experience that prompted Chuck to dream of a tournament in Simcoe.
Since 1971, the Golden Garden Tournament
has attracted over 12,000 participants. Chuck chaired the
tournament for several years then and has returned to those duties for
the last few successful years.
Chuck chaired
Simcoe's first
sports celebrity dinner at the Simcoe Legion Hall, in the early 1970s.
Turk Broda, Camiel Henry and Alan Eagleson attended.
He chaired the hugely successful
first Sports Hall
of Recognition Induction Ceremony and Celebrity Dinner in 1996 and has
held the post of Chair ever since.
Chuck and John Black organized
the first fastball tournament every held at Centennial Park during
Friendship Festival Weekend. He and Howard Woolley chaired the
building of the Simcoe Lions Club mobile float depicting Panorama that
promoted Simcoe in parades in such places as Kitchener and Quebec
City. He still promotes Simcoe wherever he goes. In 1967 he was
chair of the Friendship Festival. He has been a coach, referee and
president of Simcoe Minor Hockey.
Chuck played Junior B Hockey
in Brantford and Waterloo before embarking on a stand out career in Senior
and Intermediate leagues. Over the years, his Nitehawk Restaurant and Norfolk Pools
& Spsa have sponsored numerous teams.
But it is for his
organizational skills that Mike McArthur said: "I admire Chuck's
passion and dedication to the community. He does it for the benefit
of the players and the larger community. He displays an unselfish
devotion to the game, to the players and to his community."
Chuck was inducted into our
Hall of Recognition in 2000.
