Since 1930, the Simcoe Lions
Club has significantly and continuously provided the intrastructure for
local amateur sports.
-- Imagine hockey in Simcoe
with the Simcoe Arena or the more recent Talbot Gardens renovations.
-- Imagine baseball in Simcoe
without the Davis Street Lions Basebase Park or the lights in Memorial
Park.
-- Imagine tennis in Simcoe
without the Talbot Street Tennis Courts.
-- Imagine recreation in Simcoe
without the Simcoe Recreation Centre, Pool and Arena.
-- Imagine North, South, West
Lynn and Elgin Avenue Public Schools without their playgrounds.
Imagine all that, and you
can begin to appreciate the Simcoe Lions Club's contribution to Sports in
Norfolk County. In actual costs, their
contributions to date approach a million dollars, and would cost twice
that, or more, to replace today.
But the Lions have done even
more. Like minor team
sponsorships in hockey, softball, baseball, soccer, basketball, and figure
skating. Like $12,000 for the Silver Lake Rowing Club in Port
Dover. And $10,000 toward a skateboarding park next to Talbot Gardens.
Nor does the Simcoe Lions
Club's commitment to our community end with sports teams, recreation
programs, and facilities. They sponsor various educational and
leadership courses, have been major contributors to the V.I.P. and Quest
elementary school guidance programs, are key supporters of the Young
Theatre Players, the Institute for the Blind, school Safety Patrol
programs, and Diabetes and Dialysis programs. The Club is always ready and
willing to support the special needs of children and adults when
circumstances warrant. Recently Camp Trillum received a $28,000 van
for their use.
Simcoe Lions Club was inducted into our
Hall of Recognition in 1999.
