Hello from the NCSHR Committee A first for the Norfolk County Sports Hall of recognition, this newsletter has been created to inform and educate the public on all the exciting events occurring at the Hall. The committee has made a concerted effort to raise the profile of the Hall throughout Norfolk County and Southern Ontario and as a result, we are planning on producing two volumes each year. In the future, this newsletter will serve as a great platform to recognize the special athletes of Norfolk, make special announcements, and launch unique fundraisers. The committee would like to thank you for taking the time to read our first volume and look forward to providing you with more news and extraordinary events that will be announced in volume two! NCSHR Recognizes Five New Inductees It is with great excitement that the Norfolk County Sports Hall of Recognition announces its 2009 induction class. Five key members of the Norfolk County sporting landscape will be enshrined at a gala dinner hosted at the Greens at Renton in July 2011. Check out this hardware!!! The Norfolk Pros Celebrity Golf Tournament and Dominion Day Baseball Tournament trophies are just two of the exciting pieces of Norfolk’s Sporting History which are currently on display. This years inductees include National Hockey League player Jassen Cullimore and Canadian Champion Gymnast Kaitlin Anseeuw. In a first for the Hall, local builder, competitor, and coach Victor Borghese will be inducted with his son, National Skydiving Champion Scott Borghese. Our fifth inductee will be local amateur sports mentor Fred Bridgwater. In addition to being the guests of honour at our gala dinner, all five individuals will have their plaques added to the Wall of Recognition located at the Simcoe Recreation Centre on the Norfolk County Fairgrounds. Plea Please meet the Norfolk County Sports Hall of Recognition’s 5 newest members! Kaitlin Anseeuw As an elite amateur athlete, Kaitlin Anseeuw was able to prove herself on a provincial, national, and international level. A gymnast since the age of 3, Kaitlin began her athletic career with the local club in Delhi before moving on to the provincial level with the Simcoe Gliders Club and later, the Grand River Gymmies in Caledonia. Following a serious Achilles injury, Kaitlin decided to switch her focus from artistic gymnastics and by 2002, at the age of 14, was competing nationally in the trampoline, double-mini trampoline, and power tumbling. With winning results from national competitions, Kaitlin was chosen to represent Canada twice at global events in Germany and the Netherlands. Unfortunately she was injured prior to the German competition but came back the next year to capture a sixth place finish in Eindhoven, Netherlands. In addition to competing, Kaitlin has received many other honours. She has twice beenr ecognized locally at the Breakfast of Champions and also nationally with a Canada Youth Day Award in 2006. Kaitlin continues to play a major role in our community as a coach and volunteer for multiple organizations throughout Norfolk County.
Victor Borghese It is impossible to mention National Skydiving Champion Scott Borghese without first recognizing the person who influenced him most; his father Victor. Scott and Victor not only have been household names in the local skydiving community for decades, but have also made a major impact on the sport worldwide. It all began as Victor made an entrepreneurial venture of his passion and moved to Norfolk County to open the Simcoe Parachute Drop Zone in 1972. Since that time, all Victor did was grow the sport locally to include fifty full time members at the Drop Zone, encourage over 400 skydive enthusiasts to enjoy jumping in the area yearly, and train the top Canadian skydiver twenty-two of the thirty years the Drop Zone was open. It was not just coaching and promoting the sport that Victor enjoyed, he was world-class himself, qualifying three times for the World Parachuting Championships. He also competed nationally at the age of 62. While the Drop Zone closed in 2002, it is safe to say that Victor Borghese has left an indelible mark on Norfolk and the sport of parachuting.
Scott Borghese You need not go any further than Victor’s son, Scott Borghese, when looking for evidence of this mark. Coming to Norfolk in 1972, Scott studied under the watchful eye of his father, laying the groundwork that would lead him to becoming the number one skydiver in Canada - nine times. Competing internationally for some 22 years now, Scott Borghese has seemingly done it all. A 13 time qualifier for the World Skydiving Championships, Scott holds four Canadian Skydiving records, has accumulated 49 National Skydiving medals, and has made four appearances dropping into Canadian Football League games. In addition, Scott finished fifth overall at the 1997 World Air Games. However, it is not his status as an elite athlete which most people identify with. Following in the footsteps of his father, Scott has taken to instructing young skydivers and infusing them with the same passion for the sport his father passed along to him as a child. It is a great honour to recognize Victor and Scott Borghese as the first father-son team to be inducted into the Hall.
Fred Bridgwater. Like peanut butter and jam, so too is the relationship between amateur minor sport and Fred Bridgwater. A shining example of how an individual can influence a community, Fred has been many things to those who grew up in the Port Dover area. Whether it was hockey, baseball, or a community organization, Mr. Bridgewater’s tireless work has bettered the life of many youths in our community. A staple of Minor Hockey in Port Dover, Fred not only excelled as a player for many championship teams, but made his largest mark once his playing days were over. In 1974 he joined the PDMHA executive and would be involved in some way or another for the next thirty years. An unwavering fundraiser, Fred’s events and ideas have benefitted not only minor hockey, but minor baseball, churches, and other organizations. A major player in bringing junior hockey and minor baseball back to Port Dover, his efforts are reflected today in the athletes at the Port Dover Arena and Henry Misner Park in Port Dover. In fact, the funds raised from the Power Skating and Conditioning School he directed and ran for over 30 years, and still exists, paid off the final debt of the Port Dover Arena. Fred has had baseball trophies named after him, organized countless tournaments, and is recognized as a lifetime member of PDMHA. Named as Port Dover’s top citizen in 1996, Fred Bridgwater is a mentor and builder of sport in Norfolk County who unquestionably deserves this recognition.
Jassen Cullimore Drafted 29th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 1991, Jassen Cullimore has dedicated his life to the pursuit of the “Canadian Dream”. He learned to skate at the age of 3 ½ under the watchful eye of fellow inductee Fred Bridgewater. Jassen later honed his skills with the Port Dover Minor Hockey Association before moving on to junior hockey in Caledonia, Simcoe, and finally, with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). To cap of his junior career, Jassen was selected to the OHL’s 2nd All-Star Team as well as a member of the Canadian Junior Hockey Team which travelled to Fussen, Germany to compete in the World Junior Hockey Championships. After making his NHL Debut in 1994, Jassen has gone on to enjoy a fourteen year NHL career, the pinnacle of which was his 2004 season in Tampa Bay when he won the Stanley Cup. Jassen has recently signed with the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks and continues to make Norfolk County proud, not only as an NHL player, but for his tireless work with local charities and as a mentor to young athletes throughout the area.

How to Nominate a Great Athlete, Coach or Builder of Sport The Sports Hall of Recognition committee does not nominate potential inductees. If applicants receive 85 points or greater, they are recommended to the full committee for induction. Up to four individuals may be chosen for induction each year. Provincial winning teams are no longer being nominated for induction. Teams that won from 1900 to 2000 are being included in a permanent display at the Sports Hall.
